Torbay Common Capital Campaign Launches To Raise Funds For New State-of-the-art Community Centre In The Town

A new capital campaign launched today in support of a new “Torbay Common” Community Centre in the Town of Torbay. Campaign Chair, Brian Groves, announced the Get it on the go capital campaign, much to the delight of those in attendance. Members of the community gathered at the Jack Byrne Arena, along with representatives from the Town, region and business community to learn about the campaign which will support the construction of the new 22,000ft2 facility.

“Our community is a lively, vibrant place and I am excited by the opportunities the new Torbay Common complex will bring to our town,” says Brian Groves, Campaign Chair, “I have been a long-time resident of Torbay, and I am proud to call this place my home. But there is an obvious piece missing in our beautiful town – a common space for residents of all ages to come together – and the Get it on the go campaign is going to change this”.

The Get it on the go Campaign will raise $1.5 million in private sector funds to complete the new $8.9 million-dollar facility located on the 4.4-acre former site of the Kinsmen Centre in the town. Every dollar this campaign raises will be matched by the Town of Torbay. The remainder of the funds will be contributed by the Provincial government. The facility will serve as a true multigenerational common space for hosting a wide variety of cultural, social and recreational activities engaging families, children and seniors alike.

The facility will include a large gymnasium with a climbing wall, a large divisible multipurpose room area with a canteen/kitchen, offices and more. It will connect seamlessly to the outdoors where a new playground, splashpad and a skate park will support activity for all ages. A welcoming entrance plaza and a rear green space will support regular outdoor markets and other events.

“The residents of Torbay have spent many years commuting to and from surrounding areas for activities ranging from children’s sports to seniors’ activities and even wedding receptions that will now be able to take place right here!” said Mayor Craig Scott. “This facility is a welcomed addition to our community and will serve our residents, and surrounding communities on the Northeast Avalon, for many years to come. We look forward to all of the possibilities and the feeling of community it will sustain as we establish this new version of “common ground” that brought us all together in the beginning” he added.

“The Torbay Common is a vital piece of infrastructure in a growing community. But it is also much more than that,” says Groves, “A community with such a strong history and sense of place needs a facility that will ensure our values are preserved and passed on to future generations. Children will see the value of community and learn to adopt healthy lifestyles, ensuring a bright and promising future for our Province. Our goal is achievable if we all work together, something Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have been doing for generations. I’m asking the community to come together to make certain that the Torbay Common becomes a reality. Let’s get it on the go!”

With only 60 parking spaces, including handicap, how will this center accommodate more than 300 People.

    Hi Al!

The parking spaces as part of the community centre construction meet the town’s development regulations and proposed LEED requirements. Council is currently reviewing the matter.
