PROCLAMATION: Earth Day 2022

Earth Day is celebrated annually to celebrate the beauty of our planet, recommit to actions to promote a healthy environment and to maintain a peaceful, just, and sustainable world.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 in the United States, has since grown to be a worldwide day of environmental action; with urban areas set to become home to two-thirds of the world population by 2050, and as climate change is being observed and experienced, municipalities find themselves at the frontline of the battle against climate change.

Under the theme of Remedy Together, Earth Day 2022 hopes to raise awareness among Canadians about eco-anxiety and the need to take action together as a cure for both ourselves and also so as to help care for our planet.

The Town of Torbay has proclaimed 2022 Year of the Garden; and is pledging to plant over 100 trees this year in partnership with the Lions Club and other groups to continue protecting our wetlands, rivers, and shorelines. This will include the planting of fruit-bearing trees and shrubs growing in our existing community gardens, thereby improving food security. The Town of Torbay has adopted a Climate Change Action Plan in September 2021 committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and striving to become carbon neutral by 2050.

The Town of Torbay has partnered with Earth Day Canada, multiple municipalities across the country, and several organizations and citizens locally to meet the goals of Earth Day. This includes but is not limited to the Partners for Climate Protection, the National Garden Council, the Stewardship Association of Municipalities and Eastern Habitat Joint Ventures, the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland & Labrador, MUN Botanical Garden, the Torbay Environment Advisory Committee, the East Coast Trail Association, and Ducks Unlimited.

At the Regular Public Council Meeting of April 18, Council passed a motion to proclaim Friday, April 22, 2022, as Earth Day.
